Stressers of the day

Stress can be a good thing. Without it, we wouldn’t be motivated to do anything. We wouldn’t get up. We wouldn’t work. We wouldn’t try to learn anything new.

Too much stress is not a good thing. It can cause disease and weight gain. Too much stress can kill you.

Today I was talking about the stressors I have had in my life lately. At the beginning of the year, I was in an accident. Ended up with a concussion. That was a month ago today. I am still suffering some side effects from the concussion, but I am slowly getting better.

The accident and concussion caused a lot of stress – bad stress. God was watching over me, though, because my car wasn’t total and I wasn’t hurt worse than I was. I didn’t hit anyone else, just the median.

The roads were terrible with ice and snow. There were three accidents on the road ahead of me.  I changed lanes to avoid the accidents, went into a spin and hit the median.

Some good stressors that have happened are that I won a scholarship to the Colorado Christian Writers Conference in May, and I am joining Toastmasters.

Those two things may not seem like stressors, but they are. I don’t do too well with crowds. In fact, in the past, I have done terrible. In my recovery, I am doing much better. This past year, I have put myself in several situations with strangers several times. I came through the situations very well. I am conquering my agoraphobia.

Today I went to Toastmasters for the first time. It was great. I was a little nervous, but that went away after I was there for a short bit. The people were very friendly. I am going back.

The conference is a stressor because of what it can mean to my career. It also gives me a deadline for my book and magazine queries. Now I have to have things finished by a certain time without dragging it out.

That is a good thing. It can be a bad thing if I dwell on how many people are going to be there, how I will be alone, etc. I don’t need to do that. I need to concentrate on the good things. I need to concentrate on the things I have conquered so far in the past two years.

I have come a long way. God is good. He can turn a bad situation into a blessing. That is exactly what He has done when I moved here to Northern ID. He has turned this move into the greatest blessing of my life.

Next time I will discuss ways to deal with stress. There are many ways to deal with stress. We need to learn ways to avoid the health hazards that stress can cause.

Until next time…maryruth
