Are We Playing God with our Lifestyle Choices? Altering our DNA

An early morning thought.

Lev 19:19

‘You shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let they cattle gender (breed) with a diverse kind (species): thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed (hybrid, GMO): neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

Why are we given this warning? Because God is the Creator. We are not to mess with the DNA of anything living. It’s like playing God.

I’m not going to address the issue of using hybrid seed or even GMOs right now, except where it concerns our health and the status of our own DNA.

What we eat, what we put on our bodies, even what we think, can alter our DNA.

Think about that for a moment.

1 Cor 6:19-20

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

Many believers do not consider the importance of what they eat and drink on their spiritual health. God tells us in 3 John 2 that He wants us to be in health, even as our soul prospers.

We are to die to self to allow God to transform us back into His image (Rom 12:1-2). Gal 6:7 reminds us that God is not to be mocked, we will reap what we sow.

If our lifestyle choices sow seeds of disease, we will reap that.

In my health class, I teach that the Standard American Diet leads to ‘standard American diseases.’

Yet, Christ’s spirit is to dwell in us. How can that happen if we feed our body junk? How can that happen if we are slathering on cancer-causing chemicals into our bodies? Or allowing genetic altering vaccines to be injected? Or allow heavy metals to be injected?

1 Cor 3:16-17 reminds us that our body is the temple of God. We are also given the warning that we will be held accountable if we do not take care of this temple. The world may say differently, but the ‘wisdom’ of the world is foolishness to God. (vs 19)

Isa 55:2 asks us why we spend money on things that are harmful to our bodies? Why not use the financial resources God has given us by buying food that is healthy and nourishes our body?

It’s not hard to see with a little study that God expects us to be good stewards of our body. In fact, we are told in Exodus that if we follow His statues, we will not experience the diseases of the heathen (wicked).

When we eat junk, we alter our DNA. When we eat GMO foods, we alter our DNA. When we slather on chemicals (or put on makeup), it only takes 20 seconds for those to reach the bloodstream, leading to altering our DNA.

Stress/trauma alters our DNA. Even our thoughts can alter our DNA.

Think how often we are told not to worry, be anxious, or be afraid. This signifies lack of trust in God. It also negatively affects our health. (I will not be addressing leaky gut this time, but all these things affect the hyper-permeability of the gut lining. This leads to many mental and physical health issues.) Paul tells us in 2 Cor 10:4-5 that God gives us the power to take control over the strongholds of our mind; to take control over our imagination.

The question today is whether by our choices to eat junk, to not take care of our health, are we sinning against God?

God winks at our ignorance, (Acts 17:30) but those who refuse to learn AND put truth into practice, He will hold them accountable. God says He will leave them to their delusions (2 Thess 2:10). Whatever we do, we are to do our best as to the Lord. We are to honor Him with our body. (1 Cor 10:31)

Another aspect with this is self-control (temperance). Temperance is one of the fruit of the Spirit. We must learn to have control over our appetite (lusts of the flesh). We can do this only through the power of God working in us.

I ask again, is it sin to continue to eat things that are harmful to us? Is it a sin to ignore truth so you can continue to practice harmful lifestyle practices (drinking, smoking, eating junk fake food, having substances injected that harm)?

Truth is not relative, despite the world’s opinions. We are to seek God’s truth and compare everything to His standards if we call ourselves a child of God.

Time is running out to determine in our mind to walk 100% in obedience to God’s truth. We either consciously choose to walk in obedience to God, or we will, by default, be following after the counterfeit.

There is only one way to heaven. That’s through Christ. As we surrender our will to Him, He will lead us through the transformation process where we can walk in obedience, while relying on His strength in every aspect of our lives.

Something to think about.
