What Does Your Child Really Need?
What does your child actually need?
I went through High School, on the honors pathway. I spent countless hours studying topics I would never need again. However, that’s one of the benefits of homeschooling. We do not have to waste our children’s time with useless learning.
We want our children to grow up being able to read, write effectively, and do math (3 R’s). Being able to communicate is essential, AND this is NOT taught in public schools. (Just FYI, Toastmasters offers a training program for teens to learn how to communicate effectively.)
If I were starting over, I would focus on teaching the 3 Rs needed in running a household and communicating with our fellow man.
I would demonstrate and educate to the best of my ability how to have a saving relationship with Christ.
As part of this spiritual training, I would make sure my children knew the reason why they believe as they do. (Systematic theology. I’m creating a class on my Skool page right now for this subject.)
Outside of these topics, I would focus on the knowledge needed to survive the times ahead, as we are approaching the closing scenes in Earth’s history.
When I taught in a classroom, I taught emergency preparedness skills to the kids. We used unit studies covering different types of emergencies. They learned how to purify water, how to build shelters, and how to build a fire (and cook over it). We studied knot-tying and made fire-starters.
The 3 Rs can easily be brought into these topics.
For the personalized part of homeschooling, I would allow the child to choose a topic of interest and do a project-based learning activity. Again, this would bring in the 3Rs, science and history.
Proverbs 22:6 tells us to train up a child. This is to use their talents and interests as part of their education so they can use these for God’s kingdom.
Time is short. We need to equip our children to become living examples of God’s love in action, so they can stand firm in the troubling times ahead.
Something to think about.
