Water: the Elixir of Life

It’s the essence of life.

Except for shelter concerns in bad weather, it is the most important preparedness item to keep us alive.

We can only survive for three days without water. We can survive 30 days without food. In bad weather, we can only survive for 3 hours.

Water preparedness is one of the easiest items to prepare for, even on a tight budget.

The standard recommendation is to store 1 gallon of water a day per person. This is for drinking and cooking. This is NOT for hygiene.

The easiest way to begin is to rinse out juice/soda bottles and refill. (Milk gallon containers are NOT recommended for water storage.) Purchasing extra gallons of water is pretty inexpensive. Stores often have bottled water on sale.

Other options:

  • Purchase 5-gallon food-grade containers to store water in. (Containers can come in 1- and 3-gallon sizes.)
  • Purchase water bricks.
  • Purchase 55-gallon food-grade barrels.

Another important aspect to remember is the ability to filter water.

There are commercial filters like Berkley.

On YouTube, there are numerous videos on how to make your own water filters out of 5-gallon buckets.

Then there are personal filters like the Lifestraw.

(In my emergency preparedness classes, we created our own from a turkey baster. I tested it. Works great. Very inexpensive.)

Another option to mechanical filters is chemical purification methods, like adding chlorine (I do NOT recommend this) or iodine. Boiling works too.

There are more considerations for long-term water access. I cover these in my classes found on my Skool Page, Living Ready Collective.

For today, consider how much water your family would need for 72 hours.

Then two weeks.

Then a month.

Begin today, because it’s not IF, but WHEN an event occurs.

One small step at a time is how we become Living Ready.

One day. One step. One family better prepared.
