Where to Start: Food Storage

Food: Store What You Eat, Eat What You Store

Rotate, rotate, rotate

If I were to summarize the topic of food storage, it would be these two lines.

Many people believe that they can buy those large 5-gallon buckets of emergency food and have everything they need.

Most of those buckets are ultra-processed foods. They may fill you up, but they will not provide you with the nutrients needed for good health. It’s also important to consider serving sizes. What they consider a serving would not meet the same standards that most families have. That means it will be significantly less.

For a beginner’s first step for food storage, take an inventory of what you currently have. Build your 72-hour bag with the needed food.

Then work on two-week totes/buckets.

Then expand from there.

Buying things on sale helps with the budget. Some use coupons to stock their food storage.

I used to buy case goods when the local store had their twice-a-year sales. Now, I buy in bulk and store in Mylar bags, 5-gallon buckets, and gallon jars.

One important part of food storage is to protect it from temperature fluctuations and rodents. We want to keep things dry and cool to prolong their quality.

I personally do not worry about expiration dates. This is something each family needs to research and decide for themselves. I make sure the containers/cans are not rusty, dented, or bulging. I also check the smell.

What I used to do when I still had children at home: every time I went to the store, I would pick up an extra bag of beans, a bag of rice, some seasonings, and something like ACV.

We would store these in 5-gallon buckets, clearly labeled.

Other times, I would pick up extra hygiene items from the Dollar Store. The Dollar Store is a great resource when we are starting and money is tight.

These are some tips to get you started. I have more information available for free on my Skool page, Living Ready Collective.

Start where you are today. Do something today to move forward.

One small step at a time is how we become Living Ready.

One day. One step. One family better prepared.
