Improving the self image

Having a negative self image is something a lot of people suffer from. I have that problem too. Actually, my self image has improved a lot lately. It has been a slow gradual practice.

I want to share with you what I did to improve my self image. Maybe it can help you, too.

With the help of my counselor I sat down and made out a list of positive traits. I am sure most of us can name out a lot of our defects. Can you name some of your positive traits?

I know it is important to work on the bad stuff. That is improving yourself. But it is just as important to know and acknowledge the positive stuff.

I made a list of 18 traits about myself that were good on a 3 x 5 index card. It took me about 2 weeks to come up with that many. That’s how bad my self image was.

Then I taped that card right above the monitor of my computer so it was eye level. I see it all the time.

That wasn’t enough, apparently.

I was given another assignment. Someone else took the list and typed it out on 8 1/2 by 11 sheets of paper. 5 copies of them. Then she put them in sleeve protectors.

After that I put them all over my house. First thing in the morning and last thing at night I read them to myself. It wasn’t long before I started believing them.

What was the results? The negative self-talk stopped. My attitude improved. My depressive episodes lessened.

All because of working on my self image.

Just a simple thing. Try it. Sit with a friend or counselor or Pastor and come up with a dozen or so good positive traits. Put them on a 3 x 5 card. Make several copies. Tape them around the house. Read them several times a day.

You will be amazed at the change in your life. It changed mine.

Next time I will talk more about improving the self image.
