My Sabbath, A Sabbath, THE Sabbath
I find it ironic that many people who have no religious convictions, upon discovering that I’m a Seventh-Day Adventist, will suddenly talk about keeping Sunday as ‘my sabbath.’ Then there are those who think as long as you worship God daily, you don’t need to ‘keep’ Sabbath. I mean, we are supposed to worship God daily.
What does the Bible say?
Exodus 20: 8-11
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
‘Oh, but that was for the Jews.’
Ok, does that mean the other nine commandments are only for the Jews? Hmmm
What about Gen 2: 1-3?
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
What Jews were there at Creation week?
My purpose here is not to debate the Sabbath. There’s been a long-standing offer of $1 Million dollars to whomever can prove the seventh-day Sabbath has been changed. Not a single person can do that, using the Bible alone. For more information, check here.
See, God did not say, ‘Keep A Sabbath. He said, ‘THE seventh-day.’
Now, before you think it doesn’t matter what day you keep, let me remind you of Cain.
God gave specific directions on how a sacrifice was to be given. However, Cain thought HIS way was good enough. He could worship God in whatever way he wanted.
What happened? It was refused. He was punished.
He became so angry that he ended up killing his brother.
There’s an excellent sermon on that topic here.
Cain thought he could worship his way. Many people today feel the same way.
I think it is a bit arrogant for those who think they can worship the way they want, rather than the way God ordains us to worship. I mean, who in the world do we think we are, telling the Creator of the Universe we will NOT observe His day, but do it my way?
Talk about arrogance.
Sounds like someone else who wanted to be like God. (Isa 14:12-15)
You can take your Sundays and ‘rest.’ But it is not keeping the Sabbath.
Observing the Sabbath is more than just not working. It’s time spent in relationship with God. Special communication with Him. It’s like a date day. You plan special activities while you focus on your loved one. You make sure you are dressed well. Your house is all clean. Meals are planned and ready as much as possible so you are not distracted from the special day with your Beloved.
Most people realize that the time on earth is running out. Soon Christ will appear in the clouds to take His people home. The Sabbath is the seal that shows God who His people are. (Ezek 20:12) We will either be sealed by God, or marked by the counterfeit. Rev 22:14 tells us that it is those who keep the commandments who have the right to the tree of life.
See, the ten commandments are the foundations of God’s government. Satan was kicked out of heaven for breaking that law. Why do people think they will be allowed IN heaven when they continue to break the law?
Keeping the law does not save us. We keep it because we are saved. Because it is the sign of loving Jesus. (John 14:15) Read 1 John. John is very clear that not keeping the law is how fellowship is broken with God.
We cannot keep it of ourselves. It is only by depending 100% on God’s spirit to strengthen us.
Christ was sinless because He walked in obedience. 1 John 2:6 says we are to walk as Jesus did. Jesus came to show us how to do this. Rom 12:1-2 says that we are to present our bodies a living sacrifice so God can transform us by the renewing of our mind to do the acceptable will of God.
Jesus gave a warning in Matt 7:21-23. Many who think they will be walking through those heavenly gates because of their acts will find out that Jesus does not know them (workers of iniquity). Iniquity = sin. Sin = transgression of God’s law (1 John 3:4). James tells us that if you break one, you break them all. (James 2:10)
I pray that each reading this will study the Bible for yourself. Toss out those traditions of men and seek to do God’s will. Each day our choice is determining where we will be standing where all bow their knee to Christ. Inside the walls or outside.
Something to think about.
